What the original account establishes

These notes distinguish the recorded result from quantities or settings the contributor did not specify. Follow each source link to the original passage.

  • Cost: a Massive Muffin pan for 99p and cheap Lidl chocolate at 4 x 38p; everything else was already in the flat. The usual 12-bun muffin pan filled the giant pan twice over, so a chocolate chip muffin recipe was doubled: 510g plain flour, 6 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, 300g sugar, 2 eggs, 480ml milk, 170g butter and 170g chocolate. The giant case was greased and the fan oven warmed at 200C. The melted butter went into the flour, the batter was mixed, poured into the lined pan and baked. The oven was too hot: a crust formed and stopped the muffin rising, so the crust was sliced open and the oven turned down, with no new setting given, checking every 20 mins or so. It was cooked through 40 mins after the initial half hour, sank only a little when removed, and most of the chocolate had vanished. The original account

First things first you need The T-shirt, a birthday present

Cost:

Massive Muffin Pan – 99p
Cheapo Lidl’s chocolate – 4 x 38p

Everything else we had in the flat anyway – so effectively free.

I’d already done the science bit and work out that my usual 12 bun muffin pan filled my super-pimped out muffin pan twice over so it was a simple case of doubling up the recipe. I choose chocolate chip muffins because there seemed little that could go wrong.

That included:
510g plain flour (by the pimpest baker in the world – My main man, Fred [WormellaPimp2b.jpg] – Just look at that hat!)
6 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon of salt
300g sugar
2 eggs
480ml milk
170g butter
170g Chocolate

The Stuff

Brass balance scales on the hob with flour, sugar, milk, an egg and a Dairy Milk bar

Pimped up kit, the trusty Kenwood – also a birthday present and finally some idea of what to do:

An open recipe book propped up, showing a photograph of normal-sized chocolate chip muffins

The Pimped-out Massive Muffin case was greased. Since it came from the 99p shop I wasn’t 100% sure it would survive the oven but never mind. The oven’s fan heated so I stuck it on at 200C to warm up.

Slabs of butter beginning to melt in a scratched metal mixing bowl

First enough butter to kill a small child, melted and added to stupid amounts of Fred’ Phatest Flour

Flour tipped onto beaten egg and butter in a large white bowl, spoon mid-stir

Mixed in the trust Kenwood

Pale muffin batter being beaten with an electric mixer in a big white bowl

and poured into the lined Massive Muffin Pan

And into the oven

The muffin rising in its parchment-lined tin in the oven, already touching the shelf above

and then we waited….

.. And the disaster struck!!!

Golden domed muffin cracked across the top, still in the oven on the rack

The oven was too hot!! A crust had formed and it stopped it from rising like a proper muffin should have. Emergency action was called for and the crust was sliced open, hoping it would let the muffin rise. The oven was turned down and I resumed watching day time telly, checking on the Massive Muffin every 20mins or so.

Finally – 40mins after the initial half hour cooking time: it was cooked through. And it only sank a little when it was carefully removed from the Massive Muffin Pan

The tall baked muffin turned out onto scorched baking parchment on the kitchen worktop

A managed to hack a fair chunk out – I was hungry after all this.

The giant muffin cut open on a plate, showing pale crumb studded with chocolate chips

To show you not only was it cooked though, but magically the majority of the chocolate had vanished. I think it’s fair to say Lidl’s finest isn’t quality cooking materials.

Last but not least I have a reference picture – note the size of the shot glass… Note the size of Massive Muffin
