Pimp That Snack

Giant Freddo

Take one long boring saturday of studying (obviously 3 days before my first exam) and a desire to create a masterpiece, combine them together and this is what happened……

so, 4pm i decide to make a giant freddo, inspired by my procrastinating fuelled flicks through the pimpthatsnack.com gallery. I was aware that i only had 2 hours to do this in, as i was goint to my mate Bob’s at 6, and was gonna give him this for his birthday present.

I sketched the frog onto greaseproof paper, then used my daughter’s modelling clay (i will replace it, honest!) to create the outline, and detail. sorted!

A Freddo frog outline drawn full size on greaseproof paper taped to a flat board

Now i had to phone my boyfriend, and demand an instant ‘but its an emergency’ lift to tescos, dragging him from his busy schedule of man stuff, which he kindly obliged. I went through tescos and emerged with 20 bars of cheap chocolate, and a birthday card. Yes, i got some funny looks!

A heap of value milk chocolate bars piled on the hob beside a measuring jug

back home, right, freddo mould………… ah. its a bit floppy to pour hot chocolate into and i DONT have time for it to ‘air harden’ in my short and admittedly slightly ambitious timescale!

The frog outline covered over with cling film to make a mould surface

out came the hairdryer….. it worked fine! dries the inside of the ‘mould’ and it was tough enough to take the chocolate.

Pouring melted chocolate from a tub onto the cling-filmed outline, starting at the frog's face

meanwhile, i burnt the first 3 bars of cheap ass tesco value chocolate in the microwave, as i was too busy blowdrying mister freddo. this obviously then had to be sat at the side and sporadically munched on as the process continued.

I then used the ‘bain marie’ method, whilst (at a reduced temperature this time) microwaving more chocolate, and got heaps of gloopy yummy gooey chocolate.

Melted chocolate being stirred with a spatula in a steaming glass bowl

i filled mister freddo with clingfilm, and began the pouring method…. by this point it was 5pm and i was beginning to doubt the timescale. i had half filled the mould and now had to squeeze it into my fridge, every so often opening the door and pouring on/ spatulaing (yes, i invented a word there i think) chocolate on top of the chocolate, which had still not set.

The outline filled with chocolate and set solid, still in its cardboard box

5.45pm, i get a brainwave, and put the freddo outside, its scotland in december DUH its colder than my fridge! meanwhile, i make a giant chocolate button for my boyfriend with the rest of the chocolate, which when he comes round, he proceeds to eat all in one 2 minute sitting. eugh.

So approx 6pm, freddo still gloopy i have to drive 6 miles with it in the boot, and leave it outside Bob’s house when i go in. half an hour later it is set, woohooo!

The set chocolate frog turned out on greaseproof paper, face and arms moulded in relief

I peel off the clingfilm and brush the creases with boiling water on a pastry brush, and voila!! Bob loves it, then the head falls off, but hey, it gave us a funny photo opportunity!!
