What the original account establishes

These notes distinguish the recorded result from quantities or settings the contributor did not specify. Follow each source link to the original passage.

  • Two uni flatmates known as Crunchy Nutters took a mate’s challenge to pimp their flake. The ingredients were 2 packs of popcorn maize, 2 eggs, 1 bottle of clear honey, flour, 1 pack of almonds, a 500g pack of brown sugar, a 500g pack of white granulated sugar and 20m of kitchen foil, £11.01. The maize was boiled for 3 hrs to soften, rolled and squashed to break the skins; 200g of brown and 200g of white sugar were measured with a tablespoon of water and honey added while whisking, the maize whisked in, and, learning from earlier mistakes, 2 egg whites and a handful of flour added to bind. The electric whisk began to smell of burning, so hands took over until the mix thickened like dough; it was transferred to baking parchment on an oven tray, rolled to size and shape, sliced almonds laid on because they are bigger than peanuts, honey added for the glaze, and the flake baked in a preheated oven at 200C for 50 minutes or until golden brown. The original account

My flatmate, Gaz, and I have lived together for 2 years at uni. Everyone knows we are Crunchy Nutters. After a large one on the town, a mate challenged us to Pimp our flake. They said it couldn’t be done. Well up yours Babs, here it is. It wasn’t perfect, but we got there in the end.

Ingredients: Extras:

2 Packs Popcorn Maize 2 Eggs
1 Bottle Clear Honey Flour
1 Pack Almond Nuts
1 500g Pack Brown Sugar
1 500g Pack White Granulated Sugar
Kitchen Foil (20m)

Cost: £11.01

Ingredients on a worktop: Crunchy Nut box, sugars, popping corn, parchment and a rolling pin

First up, boil 2 packs maize for 3 hrs to soften.

Popping corn kernels tipped from a bag into a large pan on the gas hob

Roll and squash the softened maize to break skin before going in to mixture.

Measure out 200g brown and 200g granulated white sugar with tablespoon of water. Add honey to mixing bowl while whisking.

Crushed corn kernels scraped off a chopping board into a glass bowl of pale batter

Add squashed maize and whisk into mix. We learnt from previous mistakes that at this point you need 2 egg whites and handful of flour to help bind the mixture.

After we smelt the burning from our electric whisk, we realised it was struggling to cope and got our hands in. Or Gaz got his in, as you can see.

Mix should thicken to something like dough. Transfer this to baking parchment on oven tray.

Flattening the pale dough by hand on a board lined with greaseproof paper

Then roll it out, to required size and shape.

Slice almonds, which we used because they are bigger than peanuts. Place on flake. Add honey on top to get the honey glaze.

Spreading syrup across the thin rolled-out flake shape with the back of a spoon

Then cross your fingers and whack it into preheated oven (200C) and cook for 50 minutes or until golden brown.

Then comes the moment of truth!
