Privacy

The short version

Pimp That Snack is a static archive. There are no accounts, no logins, no forms, no payments and no submissions — the site stopped accepting those years ago. We do not keep a server-side visitor activity log.

It does load two things from Google — analytics and advertising — and both set cookies. They are described in full below. Everything else the page needs, including the typeface, is served from this site. Some pages also have ordinary affiliate links to Amazon; Amazon does not load here just because you view a link.

What the site keeps locally

The site is a set of files in storage served through a content delivery network, and access logging is switched off, so we keep no first-party record of who visited, from where, or when. Google Analytics reporting is described separately below.

The search box works entirely inside your browser. It downloads a small index of page titles and searches it locally — what you type is never sent anywhere.

If you pick a light or dark theme, that choice is remembered in your own browser's local storage under the name pts-theme. It never leaves your device, it is not a cookie, and it is not sent to us or to anyone else. Choosing "follow system" deletes it.

When translated pages are available, a language choice is remembered on your device as pts-language. If you choose an Amazon store, pts-amazon-store remembers that preference. Clearing either choice removes it. Both are local storage, not cookies.

To choose the initial homepage language and Amazon links automatically, our content delivery network can turn the country it detects from your connection into a two-letter code sent back to your browser. If you have not chosen a language, the homepage can open in a matching translated edition. If no country code is available, your browser language may be used instead; an unclear or unsupported choice stays in English. A saved language choice takes priority. We do not store the country code or your IP address in our access logs, and we do not send either to a separate location service. You can change the language with the site switcher and the Amazon store beside product links.

Third parties that do collect something

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages people read, which is what tells us the archive is still worth keeping online. It sets cookies and records your approximate location, device and the pages you visit. We also measure language choices and clicks on affiliate products, including the product category and selected Amazon store, so we can understand what readers use. Google processes this on our behalf. See Google's privacy policy and their note on how Analytics uses data.

Google AdSense

The site carries advertising through Google AdSense, which pays for the hosting and very little else. Google and other ad technology partners may use cookies to serve and measure ads based on visits to this site and other sites, where you have consented to that use. The partners can vary; Google's ad technology partner list links to their data-use information. AdSense may show you personalised ads based on your browsing if you have consented to that. You can review and change what Google uses at My Ad Center, and opt out of personalised advertising entirely at Google's ad settings.

YouTube, on the videos and media pages

The videos and media pages show thumbnail images served by YouTube, which means YouTube sees your IP address on those pages. No video player loads until you click one. When you do, it loads from youtube-nocookie.com, which does not set tracking cookies unless you play the video.

Amazon Associates links

Our gear page and selected project pages link directly to Amazon UK, US, Spain, Japan, France or Germany using the corresponding Associates referral tag. These are ordinary links, not embedded Amazon content: Amazon does not receive a request from your browser when you merely view one of our pages. If you click a link, you leave this site and Amazon can process your visit and any purchase under its UK, US, Spain, Japan, France or Germany privacy notice. We may earn a commission on qualifying purchases.

Sharing buttons

The share links at the foot of each project are ordinary hyperlinks. Nothing is loaded from Facebook, X, Reddit, Pinterest, Bluesky or WhatsApp, and none of them know you were here, unless you click one.

Cookies and your choice

Google Analytics and AdSense are the site's regular sources of cookies. Playing an embedded YouTube video may involve further storage by YouTube. Google's consent notice provides choices about optional analytics and advertising storage where consent is required. You can change your answer from the link in that notice, or by clearing this site's cookies in your browser.

Declining does not block access to the archive; it changes analytics and advertising processing.

If you contributed a pimp

Between 2006 and 2015, 449 people sent in a snack along with their photographs and a name to publish it under. Those names, write-ups and photographs are still on the site — that is what the archive is.

If one of them is yours and you would rather it were not here, or you want your name removed or changed, email us and we will do it. You do not have to give a reason, and there is no form.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you may have rights to ask about personal data, have it corrected or erased, object to its use, and obtain a portable copy. We do not keep our own visitor access log, but we can receive reports from Google Analytics and AdSense. Contact us about data we control, including contributor content or site analytics. Google also provides its own privacy controls for data it handles independently.

How long things are kept

The archive itself is intended to stay online indefinitely — that is the whole point of it. Google's retention of analytics and advertising data is governed by their policies, not ours.

Changes

If what the site loads changes, this page changes with it, and the review date at the top moves. There is no mailing list to notify.
