Unusual Ingredients Corner

CantabSnacks Wed Jul 05, 2006 7:55 pm #1 Last night, I rose to a bit of a challenge a friend set me a while ago:
Amongst others, I have two amazing cook books: 'Everything tastes better with garlic' and 'Everything tastes better with bacon.'
The latter has some desserts... but my friend misunderstood and then challenged me to make her a dessert with garlic in.
After some thought, and help from my friend google, I made a Lime sponge cake (with too much lime juice... it was little, well, flat...) and served it with lime and garlic sc. (lime juice and zest, finely chopped garlic, sugar, fromage frais.) It worked suprisingly well, and was very well received. I'm going to work on improving it.
So, the thing is:
I'd like some more unusual ingredient challenges... or to hear what's been done/share ideas. I'm going to carry on experimenting with garlic desserts... (garlic and lime sorbet when I get some freezer space...) -

CantabSnacks Sun Sep 17, 2006 8:57 pm #4 I have been thinking. Dangerious, I know, but I've been doing it none the less. The point is somewhat moot now that Beef Bovril is back, but the idea arose of making a jelly out of beef stock.
Am trying to think of uses - a meaty version of a jaffa cake perhaps? Or maybe a meat trifle. Or, just slip it into a flan case.
Thoughts? -

CantabSnacks Mon Sep 25, 2006 6:27 pm #13 Hehe, I'm quite surprised by the reaction to that suggestion. To be honest, I can't even work out how it would work... I think it'd be pastry, beef jelly, but then what for the "chocolate" cover [Confused] -
LadyV Mon Sep 25, 2006 9:35 pm #14 actually beef and chocolate go quite well together. I've seen several recipies for beef stew with choclate in it. Mmm beefy chocolate [Razz] -
em'n'mz Mon Sep 25, 2006 9:47 pm #15 does not snd nice
