Deeper Contemplation
I have, on occasion, missed a meal during this month. This usually arises due to a late breakfast, and then a late, large lunch that leaves me sufficiently filled so as to not require dinner. While I’m sure this is to the horror of nutritionalists everywhere, I don’t think it has any particular ill-effects. After all, who said you have to eat 3 meals a day? It’s merely a social convention, so as long as I’m not starving hungry for more than a couple of hours at a time, this isn’t a bad way to go about things.
The last couple of days this week have been a weetabix/soup combo for the first two meals (note to self: need more milk), and yesterday I had some rosemary potatoes cooked in the oven with 3 sliced sausages. Took 45 minutes but the end result was a worthy meal, plus I really need to eat the rest of these potatoes before they start sprouting out of control.
I’m conscious that I have a couple of eggs, and a good deal of plain and self-raising flour that I haven’t yet used. I’ve also got two chicken breasts left, 13 sausages, a packet of bacon, some basic tomato pasta sauce, loads of pasta and rice, frozen peas, frozen peppers, and other bits n’ bobs. What can I cook from this, I wonder? Suggestions on a postcard.
6pm: Well, don’t need to worry about what to do with the eggs anymore. I had pancakes! Milk, eggs, and flour. Couldn’t be simpler, and very nice. ![]()

Pete, I am concerned that you haven’t made the greatest use of your pasta supplies … very cheap, easy to introduce variety and will fill your tummy up really really well.
I’d make a big sausage and tomato pasta (not forgetting to fill the pasta sauce jar half again with water after you’ve tipped it out) that should last a fe days and provide a few meals … you could even take it cold to work with you for lunch.
I’d also boil up those potatos, maybe into a mash (put an egg in the mash to make it taste really creamy and yum) and put in the fridge before they become inedible.

skin the sausages and use the sausage meat with the peppers/peas(?)/any other veg you have lying around to make kebabs you can griddle/stick under the grill/in a frying pan
Chicken - obviously you can cut it up and fry it or you can steam it or poach it (sounds boring but steamed/poached chicken is SO tasty) and have with other ’stuff’
Do you have any stuffing? You could always cut open chicken breast, put stuffing in, put back together, whack a couple of strips of bacon around the outside and cook in oven - like a miniature ‘roast’! (it’s lovely) and could have with rice/peas
spanish omlette? fritatta?yorkshire pudding? pancakes?

Oh and the pasta - I have no suggestions - bloody hate the stuff!

I just had chicken breast tonight…
Lightly fry the chicken breasts (not all the way through), put them in a dish that can go in the oven, fry up some vegies (I used onions, peppers and mushrooms and added a bit of ketchup, you could use some of the pasta sauce) and added cream or milk (cream makes it a bit thicker) poor the sauce on top of the chicken breasts and whack it in the oven at about 200 degrees for half an hour… eat it with rice…yummy! (Even my boyfriend liked it!) Cheap eating and nice enough to serve to guests…

Boil pasta til cooked.
Cut up some chicken and fry til cooked.
Put pasta and chicken in a pot with some creme freche and water.
Add frozen peas and heat until peas are cooked.
Add a splash of worcester sauce.
Serve.
Yum! It’s a filling meal for a fairly cheap price and its easy to do
Loads of ideas

I’m slightly worried about the previous posting from kerry re: the kebab idea. What size of peas does she have if they’re big enough to skewar!!! Maybe she’s grown giant alien hybrid peas and is keeping them all to herself? If that is the case then what else if she harbouring in her kitchen cupboards - inflated marchmallows or stupendously enormous popcorn? You should check her out - she may be able to provide you with supplies that would keep your cupboards filled for months…..and thats just the veg for starters!

I totally agree with your idea that 3 meals a day is merely a social convention and not a nutritional requirement for life. I cannot remember the last time I ate a meal that I created thinking it’s time for (insert meal name here).
