Fitness and weight!

  1. pimpdaddy Tue Oct 17, 2006 8:01 pm #1
To welcome the new diet blogging section of the site, here we have a brand new bit to talk about health and fitness stuff.

The reason I created the blogging thing is because I'd originally created a single weight graph for myself then realised I could very easily make it all dynamic and allow people to track their own weight/body mass monitoring.

I couldn't think of any other sites that let you do this, so I decided to do it. Any feedback?
  2. em'n'mz Tue Oct 17, 2006 8:28 pm #2
um well though pure curiosity i tried it and the activation thing wouldn't work.

with a diffrent username it does work so im fine.
  3. blueeyes Tue Oct 17, 2006 8:45 pm #3
Yeah, I had the same issue. Might try a new username?

Fabulous idea, but my weight is distressing at the moment! Still, should be getting better with my added dieting insentive - student finances!

the dodgy apostrophes probably went funnu with em's, but nothing should be wrong with yours blueeyes?

If it doesn't work forward me your activiation email and I'll try to debug [Smile]

I live practically right next to the sports centre. Many of my flatmates also want to go to the gym every now and then so hopefully we all encourage eachother to go... I used to be quite a fit person but then I did my A levels and did no sport or running at all and I certainly don't want to be like that in later life.
  8. blueeyes Wed Oct 18, 2006 10:40 am #8
Yep, A levels didn't help much with the fitness of me, either. I still did lots of walking - I just had far more caolries to burn off!

On the comedy subject of fitness I inducted at yet another local gym this morning. At some point I'll visit for actual exercise.

I hate the bus that goes into town (so do most people). If I'm not in a hurry I'm walking down as it gets me exercise and saves me money. Yay go me! [Razz]
  11. em'n'mz Sun Oct 22, 2006 8:30 pm #11
i walk to town most days after skl and i walk up a massive hill every mon 2 get to band but sometimes i do cheat and go up the elevator [Very Happy]
  12. pimpdaddy Sun Oct 22, 2006 10:16 pm #12
As I earlier threatened, I did indeed go to the gym on Friday.

Subsequently totally overdid it, and now my poor arms are killing me. I always manage to do this. On the plus side after the aching goes away it won't come back as easily the next time.

I think I'm right in saying that the way you build muscle is to actually tear it (in a tiny microscopic way) during exercise, so that when it heals, it heals larger. Or something? [Smile]

That would completely put me off weight training if I did any in the first place.

As it is I don't, I'm blissful in my laziness.

I haven't walked/run far in ages. If I walk around for a long time my calf muscles (i think) start to feel really tight. It's really weird because this hasn't happened before. I guess this must be what happens after you stop exercising and then start again.
  15. kilgalport Mon Oct 23, 2006 6:45 pm #15
Being anal about cooling down stretches stops that aching afterwards. My gym has some nifty machines that show you exactly what stretches you need to do so even ahlzeimers candidates like me can work it out [Smile]
  16. em'n'mz Mon Oct 23, 2006 6:53 pm #16
i think my school is un fair becasue untill you get to ks4 your not allowed to use the cv room [Shocked]
  17. kilgalport Mon Oct 23, 2006 6:58 pm #17
Ask Santa to bring you a jogger/rebounder for xmas -cheap, cv and fun [Smile]
  18. em'n'mz Mon Oct 23, 2006 7:24 pm #18
got a xross trainer and im in ks4 so im ok but b4 that i always thought it was unfair but know im to lazy/busy
  19. em'n'mz Wed Oct 25, 2006 5:18 pm #19
but working out at the gym makes you heavier though becasue muscel ways more than fat, so if you work out you put on weight so the bmi graphs lie!!! they tell you that your getting even unhealther!!!
  20. Pimp Wed Oct 25, 2006 5:55 pm #20
That is why the BMI is a stupid, inaccurate measurement. A body builder would be obese simply because of their BMI. It doesn't take into account the width of the person or the body fat percentage.
  21. em'n'mz Wed Oct 25, 2006 5:57 pm #21
so are rugby players even though it is complelty obvious that the aren't
  22. pimpdaddy Wed Oct 25, 2006 9:12 pm #22
But this is a failing of the BMI that is well known. If you ARE such a body-builder type chances are you won't be using the BMI as a measure. But if you're a standard person like me and you it's still broad enough to be a good indicator of how you're doing.

I know that I'm not classed as 'obese' because I'm heavily muscular, anyway [Wink]

    urgh bmi issues
we had all this at the adoption meeting. as my bmi is 39 they had a prblem with that, as it has to be below 40, but they didn't think 39 was enough below when i have a disabled husband - despite the fact i've lost 7 stone and go to the gym 3 times a week
    it's all rubbish really innit

PD - that's correct about the microtears. Exercise tears down the muscle so that when it repairs itself, it builds thicker fibres to compensate. This is why you absolutely must rest and eat sufficient calories between sessions.
People who over train don't give their body enough time to rebuild the muscle, and the result is that they can actually start to get smaller.
How much recovery you depends on the individual. I'm female, 39, but a serious trainer and I've been doing heavy weights for years with the intention of building muscle (not that I look like a bodybuilder - I simply don't have the genetics...or the drugs!) and I find that training my whole body in three weight sessions (chest/back, shoulders/arms and legs) over the course of a week is sufficient.
I also use the high intensity training principle. I don't mess about. I do one set per exercise, for about 8-12 reps, heavy as I can within that range, and try to improve each week. That is what works for me.
I also walk daily and try to get at least one run in at weekends (my knees are shot, though).

Blimey, that's pretty dedicated. Puts the rest of us to shame [Smile]

i train nearly everyday but that's because i was a rower up until recently. i kind of got into a routine of training everyday through rowing so it's quite hard to kick the habit now lol

I went to the nurse yesterday - just for a check up - and she told me I was fat. I'm 5'11'' and a size 12, when she weighed me I was 13 stone and she told me I was fat and did i do any exersize, I told her I go to the gym 3 times a week and Ive got a very active job walking around all day so she said do you know about portion control!!! I almost said no, i love to spend all day stuffing my face with grease! Anyway i've got to go on a diet and go back in 6 months for a weigh in!
  33. pimpdaddy Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:37 pm #33
Wow, that's mean. If a doctor or nurse told me I was fat, I'd probably respond by telling them they're ugly. Either that, or tell them to stuff off [Wink]
  34. Vix83 Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:40 pm #34
lol, thanks! I almost said 'if im fat you must be obese' she had the cheek to sit there and preach to me when shes about a foot shorter and wider than me! shes made me paranoid now, so im just driving my bfriend crazy by saying im not gonna eat or asking if my bum looks big in this.....

Mind you I didnt tell her about the big snacks!!
  35. Cal Mon Jan 29, 2007 5:43 pm #35
13 stone is not that heavy for someone that tall, especially if you're a size 12!
I'm 5-7 and a size 12 and weigh around 10 and a half stone. I've been as heavy as 11, which is a bit too heavy for me from a vanity point of view, but I've always been a bit of a gym rat so I'm pretty muscular - that's something they don't tend to take into account when measuring weight or BMI. Most bodybuilders would rank as morbidly obese on those charts, yet have so little body fat they look as though they've been flayed.

Hi, friend I read your article where you have written that you created a single weight graph. However, I do not understand what you say by this “single weight graph”. Is this any kind of diet chart or any thing else please write more about it.
